Abstract

Loneliness is an unpleasant, anxiety inducing subjective experience that arises when an individual perceives a discrepancy between their desired and existing social relationships. Patients with mental illness often experience a difficulty in developing and maintaining satisfied social relationships and high risk for loneliness. The feeling of loneliness among hospitalized mentally ill patients is associated with many factors ( such as the lack of availability of activities at hospitals, most of hospital staff ignoring speaking with patients, stigma of mental illness, and presence of specific psychotic symptoms) and may lead to serious complications; such as, greater psychotic symptoms, poorer perceptions of overall health, reduced compliance with a prescribed drug regimen and reduced potential for full community integration and all of these complications are possible pathways to early death. So nurses should be aware of the factors that lead to the feeling of loneliness to avoid these factors and its related complications and also the management of loneliness as early as possible.
