Abstract

The present study was designed to bring the of light the biological, biochemical and histopathological changes of hyperglycemic male albino rats as affected by the extracts of some plant ( i.e. artichoke leaves) and herbs (i.e. Burdock roots, Milk Thistle seeds , Forssk flowers) and their formulation, to improve the blood glucose level , Hba1c, the lipids profile (T.G - T.C - LDL - HDL - VLDL) and some other physiological characteristics such as the liver function(AST, ALT & ALP), kidneys functions (uric acid, urea nitrogen and creatinine) , the B.W.G and weight of internal organs, in addition, effect of plant extracts and herbs on the oxidants (LPO)and antioxidants enzymes activities including SOD, GSH&CAT of diabetic rats. Forty nine (49) mature male albino rats of Sprague-Dawley strain weighting between 170:200g B.Wt., were used in this study. The rats were divided into 7 groups (7 rats in each group) one of them used as control-ve while other groups had given alloxan(150mg/kg B.Wt.), one of these group left as control+ve and other groups administrated with water plant &herbs extracts at a single dose( 750mg/kg B.Wt. ) for each of treatment for 28 days. Results reflected that there were a significant decreases in the BWG of rats, in feed efficiency ratio (FER), relative organs weight, HDL, total protein, albumin, globulin and the albumin to globulin ratio and antioxidant activities( GSH,CAT,SOD) in control +ve group when compared to control -ve group, The best obtained results showed the groups administrated with milk thistle seeds, forssk flower and artichoke leaves extracts, meanwhile serum glucose level, HBA1c, total cholesterol (TC) , triglyceride (TG), LDL, VLDL, liver function (AST, ALT and ALP), kidneys function (urea, creatinine and uric acid) and oxidant lipid peroxldation( LPO) showed a significant increases in control positive group as compared to control negative group. In this study, results revealed that all treated groups with plant &herbs extracts improved the previous parameters expect mixture of them, the best treatment observed in the group administrated with milk thistle seeds. Histopathological results considering the anatomy of the tissues of the liver, kidney and pancreas revealed therapeutic clear effects in most of the groups tested, with a variation in the degree and intensity depending on the type of extract used, the liver tissue indicated clear therapeutic changes such as activity in Kupffer cells of liver, as well as kidney tissues, and improved tissues of the pancreas were observed in Groups treated with extracts( milk thistle seeds, burdock roots and forssk flower ) as compared to the control(+) group, which showed the harmful impacts on the rats infected with diabetes considering liver, kidney and pancreas tissues. Therefore, the study recommends that the plants can be used in the treatment of the diabetes and pancreatic cells but not at limited doses or for limited periods of time so as to avoid collateral damage potential for the use of non-standardized plant and herbs.
