Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate the possible uses of garden cress seeds on impaired liver function of injected rats with carbon tetrachloride(CCl4), after knowing the proximate composition, amino acids, mineral contents and fatty acids of (Lepidium sativum, L.) seeds. The current study was performed on a total of 40 mature albino rat’s weighting 180±7 g. B.Wt. each. Rats were fed on normal (basal) ration and water was provided ad libitum. The animals were divided into 8 equal groups; one group was kept as a (C –ve) group ( group ”7”), while the other 6 groups were injected s/c by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in paraffin oil 50% V/V (2ml / kg B.Wt.) of three dose produced within 7 days hepatotoxicity in laboratory animals. Rats with liver intoxication were dis parted into five equal groups (n= 5 rats) as follows: Group (1): Fed before and after the injury on standard diet containin 5% Garden cress (Lepidium sativum, L.) seeds powder. Group (2): Fed before and after the injury on standard diet containing 10% Garden cress (Lepidium sativum, L.) seeds powder. Group (3): Fed before and after the injury on standard diet containing 15% Garden cress (Lepidium sativum, L.) seeds powder. Group (4): Fed after the injury on standard diet containing 5% Garden cress (Lepidium sativum, L.) seeds powder. Group (5): Fed after the injury on standard diet containing 10% Garden cress (Lepidium sativum, L.) seeds powder. Group (6): Fed after the injury on standard diet containing 15% Garden cress (Lepidium sativum, L.) seeds powder. Group (8): Kept as a control positive (C + ve group) and fed on basal diet only. Group (7): Kept as a control negative (C -ve group) and fed on basal diet only. At the end of experimental period (58 days), blood samples were collected for serum separation to determine the following parameters: Serum liver enzymes (ALT, AST and ALP), total protein, serum albumin, serum globulin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, serum uric acid, and urea. Liver, kidneys, heart, spleen and lungs were removed, cleaned in saline solution and dried then weighed and kept the liver only in formalin solution for histopathological examination. Data were statistically analyzed using computer program (SPSS) statical package for social using T.test. Results of the present study revealed the following: 1- Chemical composition: The present investigation had been carried out to determine the proximate composition, amino acids, mineral contents and fatty acids of (Lepidium sativum, L.) seeds. Which contains 24.45% protein, 20.37% crude fat, 8.12% crude fiber, 4.86% ash and 35.86 %of total carbohydrates, on a dry weight basis Potassium was highest in the seeds followed by phosphorous, magnesium and calcium were 970.21, 427.32, 232.35 and 243.18 mg/100g, respectively. It contained higher amount of protein most abundant amino acid was glutamic acid 16.76mg/100g and tryptophane the lowest 1.82 mg/100g.The major fatty acid was linolinic acid (18:3) 34.73% with amount of non-identified fatty acid 0.11% was also present. 2- FI, BWG and FER: Rats fed Garden cress seeds (treatment and protective) showed significantly increased in BWG compared to (+ve), whereas there was no significant difference in FER between all groups. 3- Organ weight: Animal organs kidney, lung, heart, and spleen weight were at constant (normal) rang. While the highest value of liver weight was for control positive group.
