Abstract

The main target of this study was to investigate the influence of feeding of some natural sources of coenzyme Q10 (soybean oil, grape seeds
oil and broccoli) as compared to coenzyme Q10( CoQ10) on impaired liver
function of rats injected with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). Thirty five healthy
adult male albino rats ”Sprague Dawley strain” weighing 150±15g , were
used and divided into 7 equal groups, one was kept as a control (-ve) group,
while the other groups were injected subcutaneously (s/c) by CCl4 in
paraffin oil 50% v/v (2 ml/kg B.W.) twice a week for two weeks. The
CoQ10 substitutes were given as a percent of 10% from the Basal diet but
CoQ10 was given (1mg/kg B.W.). At the end of the experiment, feed intake
(FI), body weight gain (BWG%), feed efficiency ratio (FER) and relative
weights of liver, kidneys, spleen, lungs and heart were calculated. Also,
proteins and some liver enzymes (SGOT, SGPT, ALP), total bilirubin,
indirect bilirubin, direct bilirubin, antioxidant enzymes (SOD, GPx ,CAT),
kidney function (Urea, CR, U.A), lipid profile (T.C, TG, LDL-C, VLDL-C
and HDL-C) were determined in serum. Moreover, the liver , kidney and
heart were histopathologically examined. The results indicated that rats
injected with CCl4 recorded significant changes levels of all above biological
and biochemical parameters. Histopathological examination supported these
findings and revealed a marked lesions . Supplementation with natural
sources of CoQ10 such as soybean oil, grape seeds oil and broccoli, in diets
of hepatointoxicated rats led to a significant improvements in the activity of
liver enzymes, antioxidant enzymes, kidney functions and lipid profile. It
could be concluded that the phytogenic natural sources of CoQ10 were
effective in protecting against CCl4-induced hepatointoxication liver
functions and its side effects . Thus, this natural sources could be used in
future as nutraceutical for hepatointoxication of humans.
