Abstract

Our study concluded that the addition of auricular, abdominal acupuncture or high frequency U/S to low caloric diet and exercise had a more significant effect in treating obesity and reducing BW,BMI, WC, HC, WHR,TC,TG and LDL and increasing HDL. And treatment of abdominal cellulite by high frequency U/S is more effective in reducing WC and subcutaneous fat thickness than abdominal acupuncture. Obesity refers to people, whose intake of energy exceeds their consumption of energy, leading to excessive accumulation and storage of fatty tissue in the body. acupuncture is an effective therapy in the treatment of obesity, acupuncture that it depresses the appetite by activating the satiety center in the hypothalamus. Acupuncture stimulates the auricular branch of the vagal nerve, which has been shown to increase tone in the smooth muscle of the stomach, thus suppressing appetite.
External ultrasound devices is an effective method for treatment of cellulite, Ultrasonic waves create compression cycles that exert positive pressure and expansion cycles that exert negative pressure. This pushing and pulling effect can lead to rupture of fat cells and eventually cavitation and so lead to reduction of the overall thickness of the adipose layer. The aim of this work is to assess treatment of obese patients with acupuncture and ultrasound. Our study included sixty obese female volunteers were aged from 21 to 58 years ( mean+SD 35.4± 10.3 years ),wanted to participate in our study attending the outpatient clinic of the Reumatology & Rehabilitation and Physical medicine Department of Benha University Hospitals were included in this study, All had (BMI) ≥ 30. All subjects were free from any endocrinal, cardiac, vascular and respiratory diseases. Patients were classified into three groups : GroupI( Conrtol group): Twenty patients were treated with low caloric diet and physical exercise program. Their ages ranged between 24 - 54 years with a mean of 34.1± 8.1 years . Group II: Twenty patients were treated with both low caloric diet, physical exercise programs and auricular acupuncture once weekly . Their ages ranged between 25 -55 years with a mean of 33.4± 10.3 years . Group III (A): Ten patients treated with low caloric diet, aerobic exercise programs and abdominal acupuncture for ten weeks. Their ages ranged between 21 - 56 years with a mean of 40.9± 13.1 year.Ten patients treated with low caloric diet, aerobic exercise programs and abdominal ultrasound for ten weeks. Their ages ranged between 33 - 58 years with a mean of 36.5± 10.4 year. Our results were: -There was no statistically significance difference between the mean age of all groups. -There was a highly statistically significant difference in the mean percentage of weight reduction in the studied groups after intervention being highest in group II and lowest in group I.
- There was a highly statistically significant difference in the mean percentage of BMIs reduction in the studied groups after intervention being highest in group II and lowest in group I. - There was a highly statistically significant difference in the mean percentage of Waist Circumference reduction in the studied groups after intervention being highest in group III B and lowest in group I.
- There was a highly statistically significant difference in the mean percentage of Hip Circumference reduction in the studied groups after intervention being highest in group III B and lowest in group I.
- There was a highly statistically significant difference in the mean percentage of Waist Hip Ratio reduction in the studied groups after intervention being highest in group III B and lowest in group I.
- There was a highly statistically significant difference in the mean percentage of TG reduction in the studied groups after intervention being highest in group III B and lowest in group I, and a statistically significant difference in the mean percentage of TC reduction in the studied groups after intervention being highest in group III B and lowest in group I,and in LDL being highest in group III B and lowest in group III A, and no statistically significant difference in the mean percentage of HDL increase in the studied groups after intervention being highest in group III B and lowest in group IIIA.
- There was a statistically significant difference in the mean percentage of reduction of ultrasonographic abdominal wall thickness in group III B and group III A after intervention in paraumbilical ,infraumbilical, supraumbilical area being highest in group III B and lowest in group III A. Our study concluded that the addition of auricular, abdominal acupuncture or high frequency U/S to low caloric diet and exercise had a
more significant effect in treating obesity and reduction of BW,BMI, WC, HC, WHR,TC,TG and LDL and increasing HDL. Also we found that treatment of abdominal cellulite by high frequency ultrasound is more effective in reducing WC and subcutaneous fat thickness than abdominal acupuncture.
