Abstract

This study presents theoretical study on full-scale, ribbed, single span bridge deck made of high strength concrete. The bridge deck is assumed to be simply supported on the two parallel shorter edges and the parallel longer edges were left free. The bridge deck consisted of two lanes and four longitudinal ribs under the effect of traffic load according to the Egyptian code of practice recommendations. The bridge was designed using elastic stress field at the ultimate design load as input to the ultimate limit state for strength. The theoretical study of this work was performed by using a well-known nonlinear finite element software ANSYS. The main variables of this study were the skew angle which various from 00 to 450, the effect of free and simply supported cross ribs located at different positions and the effect of compressive strength on the cracking load, failure load, deflection, steel reinforcement stresses, concrete strain and ductility. As the theoretical study will be considered in this thesis, so verification by ANSYS software was carried out using results of five large reinforced concrete skewed slabs and one ribbed skewed slab which were tested experimentally by previous researcher. Good agreement between experimental and theoretical results was obtained.
