Abstract In the present study the environmental hazards due to urbanization and industrialization in the area of port said city was assessed the literatures reported that urban areas around the world suffers from four main environmental problems that led to environmental degradation and deterioration these problems are the local warming radioactive contamination heavy metals contaminations and waste management. The present research studied each of the stated problems and assess for its impact in the following recommendations for each problem will be suggested in the light of literatures reviews sitc characteristics and the national regulations . The area of port said shows a great pace of urbanization which is associated with increased industrial activity especially in the area of south port said in the absence of environmental regulations the urban bare lands and industrial area sprawl over the water body (lake manzala) taking into account that the study was done over a relatively short period of time (from 2000 to 2012) the rate of land use/ land cover chan ge is considered to be rapid and high. The study indicated that the change in land use/ land cover (LULC) is associated with an increase in the surface temperature by up to 6C in some area (about 15% rising in temperature ) temperature rise has its negative impacts on both human and environment so it highly recommended to: Case the urban sprawl over the surface water (lake manzala) as the decrease in the water area enhance the negative effects of temperature rise . Adopt of stratify to increase the green cover in port said by adding rood side trees increasing the area of garden and by building green roofs. Adopt of environmental regulations for the industrial sectors to eliminate the emission of CO2 and other warming gases. Carry out an ecological assessment survey to study the effect of the temperature rise on the biodiversity in the area. The research also studied the radioactivity levels in the area the results showed that the area has low radioactive background and low concentration of the natural radioactive materials (U,TH,andK)but the area coudnt be considered clean from radioactive contamination as in the northeastern part of site A (near the industrial area) the high concentration of the radioactive materials forms an anomaly that is extremely higher than the background of radioactivity in the area the limited aerial extent the high radioactivity and being buried in artifial (industrial) soil this gives an indication that the source of this high radioactivity is a radioactive waste dumped directly in this area. The radiological impact assessment was carried out using the traditional soil sampling and analysis the calculated hazard parameters indicated that the radiation came from the illustrated anomaly exceeds the safe limits which were stated by the international agencies (i.e IAEA and UNSCAER) accordingly it is highly recommended to: Carry out a remediation action in the polluted site Contact the responsible agencies for radiation safety (i.e. nuclear and radiological regulatory authority ) to determine the best remediation strategy. Adopt the environmental and safety regulations for the factories and workers (e.g. using the dosimeter) Carry out medical check for the worker in the factories at present and periodically in future Carry out a monitoring program periodically in this area to assess for possible future contamination. The heavy metals contamination in the top soil was also assessed using the magnetic susceptibility as a proxy the concentration of ten heavy metals Fe,Co,Cd,Ni,Mn,Mo,V,Cu,Pb and Zn were measured using atomic absorption spectroscopy the hazerd parameters were calculated and the results indicated that the area is highly contaminated by pd cd and zn and with lesser extent the Mo,V and Fe show potential risk accordingly it is highly recommended to: Carry out a remediation action in the area of contamination using the available techniques we highly recommend the use of amendments (organic and inorganic) Contact the ministry of environmental affairs Adopt the environmental regulatory for industries in this area Carry out an ecologic research on the fish and marine biodiversity in the area to assess for the degree of contamination and determine the suitability of the marine products as foods In the present study the environmental hazards due to urbanization and industrialization in the area of port said city was assessed the literatures reported that urban areas around the world suffers from four main environmental problems that led to environmental degradation and deterioration these problems are the local warming radioactive contamination heavy metals contaminations and waste management.
