Abstract

Problems of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or
impulsivity represent one of the most common reasons for
referral to child neuropsychiatric services. ADHD is estimated to affect 5–10% of school-aged children worldwide.
Deficits in executive functions are commonly, although not always, found in patients with ADHD. Impairing symptoms of inattention, restlessness, and impulsivity may persist into adulthood in about 40–60% of cases. The relationship between ADHD and sleep
disturbances has been largely overlooked, both in the
scientific literature as well as in clinical practice by child
psychiatrists, neurologists, and pediatricians assessing and treating patients for ADHD symptoms. However, prompted in part by the frequent complaints of sleep disturbances associated with ADHD symptoms in clinical practice, an increasing number of studies on the relationship between ADHD and sleep have been published in recent years, examining sleep in both children and adults with ADHD. Gaining insight into the relationship between ADHD and sleep is paramount both from a theoretical and from a practical standpoint. The association between disrupted sleep patterns and ADHD appears to be modulated by the prefrontal cortex and the dopaminergic system. Further elucidation of the ways in which these systems relate to both sleep and the presence of psychological disorders can help improve.
