The clinical importance of congenital neonatal infections was recognized more than half a century ago. Although it no longer is possible to diagnose all recognized congenital infections with one panel, the original TORCH diseases continue to be of clinical importance, especially that they can causing severe neurological disabilities.
Also, some researches had showed correlation between certain congenital infections e.g. congenital toxoplasmosis and some psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia.
Diagnosis can be done in the antenatal period after diagnosing the mother through both laboratory and imaging studies. Postnatal, diagnosis can be achieved through different studies and modalities vary in sensitivity and specificity .In which the standard role is to pick up congenital cases before we miss them as misdiagnosed cases.
Treatment of congenital infections varies according to time of diagnosis whether during the antenatal period or shortly after delivery in which timing is very important.
Management could be divided into preventive and curative treatment. Some infections has a powerful vaccination such as; rubella. Others still have time to achieve such a powerful vaccine. Curative treatment depends on the stage of the disease (early or late e.g. complicated) but starting soon
