Abstract

Preterm birth is one of the major clinical problems in obstetric and neonatology as it is associated with perinatal mortality , sever neonatal morbidity. In some cases child hood disability. It is reported that 60-80% of all neonatal mortality and morbidity is due to preterm birth.
In this study maternal serum ferritin was used as a predictor marker for preterm labour. The study was carried out in Ain Shams university maternity hospital and El-Salam specialized hospital . It included 60 pregnant women their gestational age ranged from 26wks and before completed 37wks.They were classified into two groups.
(A)Group: study group which included 30 pregnant women between 26 wks and before completed 37wks of pregnancy with threatened preterm labour.
(B)Group: control group which included 30 pregnant women between 26 wks and before completed 37wks of pregnancy with no risk factor for preterm labour.
All women were subjected to full history taking ,full general, abdominal, pelvic examination, in addition to estimation of serum ferritin in 2nd trimester, the patients were followed up untile delivery either by weekly visit or call phone.
The serum ferritin was found to be higher in patients who delivered preterm compared with patients who complete their pregnancy.
Elevated serum ferritin concentration resulting from increase hepatic synthesis is considered as an acute phase response to inflammation.
