Abstract

In this thesis, a new wedge disc brake mechanism is designed and constructed in Automotive and Tractor Engineering department, Faculty of Engineering, Minia University, in order to increase the brake force. This work deals with an experimental work. It also covers optimization methods based using Minitab 16 software. The results indicate that, The optimal operation condition are applied pressure 10 bar, rotational speed 54 rpm, wedge angle 15, and dry condition. Also, the optimal design parameters are friction material thickness 10 mm, friction material length 11 cm, single friction material slot, and no rotor disc holes. The optimization results imply that, the significant operation parameters are: the applied pressure, wedge angle, interaction between applied pressure and wedge angle, and square terms for wedge angle. Friction material thickness, friction material length, and interaction between friction material thickness and slots are the most significant design parameters. The mean error of the model predicted by the model equations and experimental values are less than 5%.
