Abstract Summary The adenoids are lymphatic tissue localized at the mucous layer of the roof and posterior wall of nasopharynx. Adenoid hypertrophy is the unusual growth of the adenoid tonsil. The maximal size of the adenoids occurs at about 5 years of age; around the time of puberty, gradual adenoidal involution normally begins. Abnormal adenoidal growth occurring during childhood extend through the nasal choanae result in impaired nasal respiration. In the presence of impaired nasal respiration and the resulting chronic mouth breathing, the mucous covering of the vocal folds becomes dry, leaving the folds unprotected. Purulent postnasal discharge bathing the vocal folds has often been observed in patients with vocal nodules that is associated with dysphonia. Dysphonia defined as perceptual audible change of a patient’s habitual voice as self judged or judged by his or her listeners. The diagnosis of dysphonia relies on clinical judgment based on phoniatric symptoms, auditory Perceptual Assessment of Voice (APA) and full Laryngeal examination. Our study was conducted to evaluate the effect of adenoid hypertrophy on voice. |
