Abstract

Propolis or bee glue is one of the most powerful hive products of honey bees
and is rich in flavonoids, which are known for their antioxidant activity .The
present study was aimed to clarify the antioxidant activity of propolis in rats
subjected to oxidative stress via hydrogen peroxide comparable with vitamin
E as a documented strong antioxidant. For this purpose two experiments
were conducted. In experiment 1: the rats were divided into control, stressed,
and treated groups with propolis and/or vitamin E. In experiment 2: the rats
were divided into control, stressed and treated with propolis before and after
oxidative stress. The data obtained revealed that propolis and ∕ or vitamin E
were able to reverse the adverse effect of hydrogen peroxide in rats. Propolis
has a favorable effect on antioxidant enzymes and on certain metabolic stress
related parameter which indicates that, propolis has a powerful antioxidant
activity and free radical scavenging property, so it can be used successfully
as a treatable and a preventive tool against oxidative stress induced by
hydrogen peroxide.
