Abstract

Avian influenza is one of the most important zoonotic viral diseases all around the world. The present study was carried out to report the occurrence of infection in poultry and human contact and applying the different veterinary extension tools to decrease the
hazard of avian influenza in Menufya governorate. Total of (294) tracheal swabs were collected from poultry were
examined by Rapid field test and confirmed by RT-PCR before (147) and after veterinary extension (147). The examined chickenhas clinical sign of avian influenza (ruffled feathers, decline in egg production, edema of head and neck, swollen and cyanotic combs and wattles and sudden death) while duck and geese suffer from
(swollen sinuses, nervous signs in younger birds) rang of age from
20 days to 1 year backyard poultry. As well as nasal and throat swabs (100) were collected under sterile condition from 50 housewives (20-35 year) and 50 students (8-15 year) have clinical
signs of influenza before veterinary extension and another 100 swabs
were collected by same sequence after veterinary extension and examined by RT-PCR. the role of veterinary extension was examined using different tools (poster and flier- Movies - television
- seminars) to increase awareness against influenza in housewives
and students, which help to decrease the prevalence of the disease
among birds and humans and consequently decline the rate of morbidity and mortality.
The occurrence of AI infection were decreased in poultry from
9(6%) before veterinary extension to 4(2.7%) after veterinary
extension. While the occurrence of infection in human was lower
after veterinary extension 3(3%) than before veterinary extension
5(5%).After using questionnaire to determine awareness of 800
housewives and 800 students of avian influenza included in these
data( Source of knowledge, clinical sings of disease in poultry and
humans, reserves should be followed for the prevention of disease
and the extent of use and other health practices). It has been
observed that the housewives have a lack of awareness against the
symptoms of the disease in poultry and human, the proportion who
gave yes (complete answer) symptoms in birds were 37.75% and
gave yes (a complete answer) for the symptoms in humans were
53.75%. It was noticed that the behavior of housewives in breeding
methods and the separation of different types of poultry and breeding
in place near to living 78.6% fulfilled a separate place 21.4%. With
concentration of light on the trends towards housewives avian
influenza. It was noticed that the stop of breeding of poultry after
avian Influenza 17.5% and follow safety precautions when breeding
29.5%. After developing strategic plan and veterinary extension,
designing a strategic and identify specific messages to address the
shortage of awareness toward avian influenza and severity of avian
influenza using some (fliers, posters, movies),it was obtained that
the practices and attitude of housewives change to positive action as
action reporting when a suspected case change from (13.75%) to
(12.4%) , this indicate the big important role of veterinary extension
in application of good hygienic measures, specific media messages
for young people to simplify the information.
