The present study deals with a topic entitled: ”Social Problems of the Elderly and their Relationship with some Social Variables – A Sociological Study in the Municipality of Al-Marj, Libya.” This study aims to identify the most important social problems facing the elderly inside and outside the family. It also aims to identify the relationship of the elderly’s social problems with the following variables: education, income, accommodation, social status, social background (urban, rural), gender, work variable. The study also aims at identifying the multiple correlation of the variables being studied with the elderly’s social problems. Moreover, the study aims at identifying the elderly’s most important social, economic and recreational needs. The study sample consisted of (486) elderly persons, of whom (306) were males and (180) were females. Their ages were 65 years and above and they were from the residents of the municipality of Al-Marj. They were selected in accordance with the accidental sample method, while the study adopted the employment of the descriptive analytical approach and used from its methods the social survey by the sample method, the comparative method, and the correlation method. As for the tool that was used to collect the data of the study, it was the interview form prepared by the researcher. The statistical analysis of the data consists of a number of results the most important of which are the following:
(1) The elderly suffer from social problems within the family circle, with an arithmetic mean amounting to (0.21). (2) The elderly suffer from social problems outside the family circle with an arithmetic mean amounting to (35.0). (3) There is no statistically significant relationship between the social problems of the elderly and the following variables: education, housing, social background (urban/rural), gender, and the work variable in general. (4) There is a statistically significant relationship between social problems and the income variable for low-income people. (5) There is a statistically significant relationship between social problems and the social situation variable for the benefit of elderly widows and divorced (6) The variables most relevant to social problems of the elderly are: gender, social status and income. (7) One of the most important needs of the elderly are cultural and recreational needs as the arithmetic mean of ratios amount to (0.78), followed by social needs, where the arithmetic mean of ratios amount to (0.71), and then economic needs where the arithmetic mean of ratios amount to(57.0).
