Abstract In the present study, the 70% methanolic extract of the leaves of Terminalia bellerica as well as its derived fractions and 70% acetone extract of Terminalia arjuna as well as its derived fractions were evaluated as antioxidants using two different methods; DPPH radicals scavenging activity assay and phosphomolybdenum method as well as cytotoxic using Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT). The results revealed that the 70% methanolic of Terminalia bellerica extract as well as its derived n-BuOH fraction exhibited a potent antioxidant activity; furthermore, 70% acetone extract of Terminalia arjuna extract as well as its derived n-BuOH fraction exhibited a potent antioxidant activity; Also, the activity of the tested extracts of the two plants was highly correlated with their total phenolic contents. The cytotoxic studies showed that pet. Ether and ethyl acetate fractions of Terminalia arjuna showed high cytotoxic activity; also, the results showed that n-BuOH and diethyl ether fractions of Terminalia bellerica showed high cytotoxic activity. - Owing to high antioxidant and cytotoxic activities of the 70% methanolic extract and 70% acetone extract of the two plants under investigation and their derived fractions, theses fractions promoted us to subject it for chromatographic isolation. |
