Abstract

 Cardiac hypertrophy arises as a result of the increased strain on the cardiac wall due to the increased pressure or blood volume in the ventricle. Many studies have proved that cardiac hypertrophy is considered one of the most dangerous factors that increased the probability of cardiac and cerebral diseases.
 Therefore, it was necessary to measure left ventricular mass index to recognize cardiac hypertrophy and predict it early to avoid complications.
 Aim of the work is to define the normal values of the left ventricular mass index of the young healthy Egyptians living in El-Sharkia Governorate.
 Patient and Methods:
 This study included 200 normal healthy adult Egyptians living in El-Sharkia governorate aged 15 to 35 years old not complaining of any cardiac diseases.
 They were examined by M-mode and 2-D echocardiography to exclude any cardiac disease and to calculate LVM using Devereux’s formula then LVMI in g/m2 obtained by indexing LVM to body surface area.
 Results:
 We have found that normal LVM in young males and females in El-Sharkia Governorate was156.9+39.3 gm and 133.5+38.3 gm, respectively .By indexing the LVM to the body surface area ,we found that LVMI in males was 82.8+20.9 g/m2 and in females it was 75.5+18.4 g/m2.
 LVM in males was smaller than African- American men ( 156 ± 39.3 g Vs 181.6 ± 35.8 g ) , white American men ( 156 ± 39.3 g Vs 170 ± 32.1 g ) and rural Japanese men ( 156 ± 39.3 g Vs 187 ± 33 g ), and near to Hispanic men (156 ± 39.3 g Vs 163 ± 25.7 g ) and urban Japanese men ( 156 ±39.3 g Vs162 ± 27 g ),but larger than Asian – American men ( 156 ± 39.3 g Vs 129.1 ± 20 g ). Whereas our females LVM was larger than that of Hispanic women ( 133.5 ± 38.3 Vs 115.7 ± 24.2 g ) and Asian – American women ( 133.5 ± 38.3g Vs 89.4 ± 13.3 g) but near to African – American women ( 133.5 ± 38.3g Vs 128.8 ± 28.1 g ) .
 Even between different governments of Egypt. the LVM differs between healthy individuals of the same age .Our males LVMI were smaller than these in cairo government ( 82.8 ± 20.9 g / m² VS 88.4 ± 17.5 g / m² ) , and also our females LVMI was smaller ( 75.5 ± 18.4 g / m² VS 84.9 ± 18.8 g / m² ) . Compared to Al Gharbia government our males LVMI was closer to those in Al Gharbia ( 82.8 ± 20 g / m² Vs. 84.13 ± 3.96 g / m² ) ,and our females LVMI was near to those in Al Gharbia ( 75.5 ± 18.4 g / m² Vs 78.7 ± 3.99 g / m² ) .
 A positive statistical significant difference between males and females was recorded regarding LVM and LVMI values.
 LVMI showed positive a significant correlation with age ,weight ,height , BSA, BMI.
 It’s recommended to study LVM and LVMI in different Governorates and evaluate different categories should be included.
