Abstract

Record values are defined as a model of successive extremes in a sequence of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d) random variables. It is of a great interest to note that there are situations in which only records are observed. Actually, often in industrial stress testing, meteorological data analysis, athletic events, and other similar situations, measurements may be made sequentially and only values larger or smaller than all previous ones are observed. Another related model is the current records model. The nth upper current record is defined as the current value of upper records in a sequence of i.i.d random variables, when the nth value of either lower or upper record is observed. This study is devoted to the development of distribution theory and procedure for inference with current records from a sequence of i.i.d continuous random variables. Beside the study of current records, the nth record range is investigated. The nth record range is the difference between the upper current and lower current records. This dissertation consists of four chapters, the first of them is an introductory chapter, beside the list of references. It is worth mentioning that the material of the second, third and fourth chapters of the thesis were edited and submitted as three separated papers Barakat, et al., (2013a, 2013c, 2013d). Chapter 1: Most of the material of this chapter is an overview of principle results related to the distribution theory of record values; namely, the standard record values, record times, the exact distribution of record values and the moments of record values which are all discussed in the first four sections of this chapter. In addition, the last two sections of this chapter are devoted to give an exhaustive survey of the distribution theory of the current records as well as the record range.
