Abstract

Risk based inspection is one of the new techniques for inspection planning in oil and gas industry, it is considered as one of the methods for implementing asset integrity management, RBI is based on generic data of several accidents and incidents, which I facilitated the integration of risk management techniques with the inspection planning and decision making regarding different types and components of assets in the oil and gas industry. Inspection planning was depending only on experience and personnel decisions, which used to plan inspection for equipment only on the basis of shut down for maintenance, or severe conditions expected based on simple analysis based on their experience. The contribution of risk management techniques in this field facilitated the organization of the several factors which could affect inspection planning, and made several procedures, so inspection planning lead at the end to cost-effective and safe operation of the equipment. This thesis aimed at studying the inspection planning for pressure vessels in process plants based on risk management using the RBI technique, the RBI API standard procedure is used for the estimation of the final inspection plan of pressure vessels in process plants. The work was done mainly based on the identification of the stages required for inspection plan based on the API procedures including data gathering, inspection readings analysis, corrosion damage mechanisms identification, probability of failure estimation, consequence of failure assessment, risk analysis, and finally building the inspection plan for pressure vessel by implementing the appropriate intervals for safe and cost-effective operation with the appropriate inspection techniques for the expected damage mechanisms.
