Abstract

The present work included 30 patients with blunt chest trauma. They were 21 males and 9 females. Their ages ranges between 6 and 62 years. The aim of this study was to assess the role of multi-detector row computed tomography in the evaluation of blunt chest trauma. All patients included in the study were examined using 16 multidetector computed tomography scanner Toshiba Aquilion. The scan parameters used were 120kVp and ≤ 240mA per slice; tube rotation 0.75s and slice thickness 1.25 mm. In the present study the following results was obtained: The peak age incidence was in the middle age group and the majority of patients are males. · Multi-detector CT allowed full covering and rapid examination of the entire chest in a single breath hold maneuver. MDCT was seen valuable in the evaluation of all lesions caused by blunt chest trauma. In the present study, the frequency of chest injuries were in order according to commonality; chest wall injuries, pleural injuries, parenchymal injuries, mediastinal injuries and finally the dorsal spine injuries. The chest wall injuries detected in our study included rib fractures, fractured clavicle, fractured sternum, fractured scapula and subcutaneous emphysema.
