Abstract

Aging is a basic natural and biological process that goes on continuously in every individual and is responsible for changes affecting the organs by passage of time. It starts with the onset of life and terminated by death. That is to say that, to live is to age.
The term “geriatric syndrome” is used to capture those clinical conditions in older persons that do not fit into discrete disease categories. Many of the most common conditions cared for by geriatricians, including delirium, falls, frailty, dizziness, syncope and urinary incontinence, are classified as geriatric syndromes. Nevertheless, the concept of the geriatric syndrome remains poorly defined. While heterogeneous, geriatric syndromes share many common features. They are highly prevalent in older adults, especially the frail elderly. Their impact on quality of life and disability is substantial.
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most common non-communicable diseases (NCDs) globally. It is the fourth or fifth leading cause of death in most high-income countries and there is substantial evidence that it is epidemic in many economically developing and newly industrialized countries. Diabetes is undoubtedly one of the most challenging health problems in the 21st century. Egypt had been estimated to be the 8th country in the prevalence of diabetes.
Diabetes is associated with a greater disease burden at all ages, even in people in nursing homes who have diabetes. People with diabetes report poorer functional status than those who do not have diabetes. Diabetes complications have important effects on patients’ quality of life as well as socio-economic implications.
The aim of the present work is to assess Health-related quality (HRQOL) of life in elderly patients with two major chronic problems namely type 2 diabetes complications and geriatric syndromes. Application of (HRQOL) information in elderly care, where both physical and psychological impairment will be addressed, will contribute to the improvement of physician consultations and patient care in clinical practice.
Specific objectives:
1. To compare the health-related quality of life of elderly patients with type II diabetes complications and elderly with geriatric syndromes.
2. To identify demographic, clinical, health care and psychosocial factors that affect the quality of life of these patients.
3. To forward recommendations for policy makers and service providers directed towards therapeutic or rehabilitation programs, this can improve elderly patients’ health by lessening of the effects of chronic problems on elderly patients’ lives.
This study was carried on 200 patients with type 2 diabetes complications (group 1) and 220 non- diabetic elderly patients with geriatric syndromes (group 2).
All patients included in this study were subjected to:
•Full history taking including socio demographic data, drug and family history.
•Complete clinical examinations.
