Abstract

Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder affecting 1% of populations all over the world. Schizophrenia is a complex disease, many environmental factors and many genes interact to display this disease. The treatment options are psychological and use of anti psychotics that help many patients to gain control of their symptoms, increase compliance and prevent relapse. The schizophrenic patients have risk factor that make them more susceptible to diabetes mellitus than normal populations. These factors are environmental, genetic and the use of antipsychotics that can cause diabetes mellitus by many mechanisms. To prevent or lessen this problem the patient must be monitored for metabolic derangement and undergo behavioral intervention. If these measures fail, additional drug (glucose and weight lowering) can be added to anti psychotics.
