Abstract Acute gastrointestinal bleeding is a potentially life-threatening abdominal emergency that remains a common cause of hospitalization. In Egypt the portal hypertension and variceal bleeding are the commonest causes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding as documented by various studies. Advances in endoscopic techniques have rendered endoscopy as the 1st line of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. It improves outcome of these patients significantly decreasing both recurrent bleeding and mortality.
