Abstract

Turning of local AISI-1035 steel is gaining importance due its growing utilization to manufacture many products such as shafts, flanges, bushings, forgings, crankshafts, connecting rods, bolts, nuts; etc. In addition; it is widely employed in many engineering applications such as automobile and motor constructions.
Machinability of materials may be assessed by many operational responses outputs such as the surface quality, the extent of tool edge wear or the resulting cutting forces as well as the specific cutting pressure and the hardness of the workpiece material. Moreover, relative tool-workpiece machinability are usually evaluated in terms of cutting forces, cutting temperature, surface roughness, chip compression ratio, tool wear, and tool life.
In the current work, a series of tests were carried out to determine the machinability data of AISI-1035 steel using coated carbide tools in dry orthogonal turning. The effects of cutting conditions (cutting speed, feed, and depth of cut) on the machinability were studied. Results indicated that effect of cutting conditions on machinability parameters as the cutting speed is the most effective when increases, the cutting force and surface roughness decrease while the tool wear increases.
