Abstract To determine the frequency of hypothyroidism in patients suffering from thalassaemia major. Methods: This descriptive study included .128 diagnosed thalassaemia major patients aged (3-17) years not known to be thyroid History of blood transfusion and chelation therapy was collected. Random blood samples were drawn and thyroid profile (serum thyroxine[ fT4] and thyroid stimulating hormone concentrations [TSH]) was done by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Primary hypothyroidism was defined by a TSH level >4DIU/ml. Serum ferritin was measured using immunoenzymometric assay Results: Subclinical hypothyroidism was seen in .15 (.12%) patients .with normal f T4 levels and elevated TSH levels. No cases with secondary hypothyroidism were diagnosed as all fT4 levels were normal. Mean serum ferritin level was 907.58±685.4 ng/ml. There was no significant difference between serum ferritin level in children and adolescents with normal thyroid function and those with subclinical hypothyroidism . |
