Abstract

As the name implies, an Ec02 city builds on the synergy and interdependence of ecological and economic sustainability and the fundamental ability of these to reinforce and strengthen each other in the urban context. The thesis consists of six chapters:
Chapter One: ”Introduction” Outlines the key issues driving the urgent need for a new approach to urban planning, development, and management. While all the transformations that are now occurring may be seen as threats, they may also be perceived as opportunities for the rapid and widespread adoption of a new approach to design, decision making, and investment.
Chapter Two: ”Ecological Cities” Proposes a more comprehensive understanding of how ecosystems are structured and how they function in an attempt to create the sustainable cities and towns we need.
Chapter Three: ”Economic Cities” Identifies a number of assessment methods that may be applied in cities using simple and scalable tools that adjust to the needs and capacities of the users.
Chapter Four: ”Eco2 Cities” Identifies the key strategies and principles that define the Ec02 Cities approach.
Chapter Five: ”Good Practice Cities” Demonstrates the tangible benefits of cost- effective approaches that have led to greater ecological and economic sustainability in cities.
Chapter Six: ”Conclusion and Recommendations” It is for the purpose of enabling cities especially those in developing countries to realize this value and take on a more rewarding and sustainable growth trajectory that the Ec02 Cities Approach has been developed as an attempt to dovetailed ecological and economic considerations so that they result in cumulative and lasting advantages for cities.
