Abstract The aim of this work was to study the clinical effect of systemically administered Purslane extract capsules on treating erosive OLP in comparison with that of the conventional corticosteroid therapy. In this clinical study, 20 patients with histologically and clinically diagnosed erosive OLP were selected from Oral Medicine, Oral diagnosis and Oral Radiology department in Faculty if Dentistry, Alexandria University. They were equally divided into 2 groups: Study group (A): Ten patients were instructed to take Purslane extract capsules of a dosage of 235 mg as 1 capsule per day for 3 months. Study group (B): Ten patients were to be treated with corticosteroid therapy, either topically applied in the form of orabase ointment to be applied 4 times a day, or in the form of systemic corticosteroid; according to the case. All patients were examined and re-evaluated into pain scores (VAS) and size scores at four points; before treatment, one, two and three months. The results of this present study revealed that systemically administered Purslane extract capsules were very effective in reduction of pain and lesion size of erosive OLP .Corticosteroid therapy which is the conventional treatment proved to be very effective as well. No statistically significant differences were found between both modalities. from the results of this study, it was found that Purslane extract capsules is a safe and effective treatment option for erosive OLP. |
