Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of maxillary dentures lined with silicone based soft liner ”Molloplast B” and acrylic based soft liner ”VERTEX soft” on the oral Candida carriage among complete denture wearers.
Twenty male patients having completely edentulous maxillary and mandibular arches were precisely selected and thoroughly examined in an attempt to reduce human variables and eliminate any factor or habit that might adversely affect the results of this study.
The patients were randomly divided into two equal groups: -
Group 1 : Patients in this group were rehabilitated with maxillary heat cured acrylic dentures lined with silicone based soft liner ”Molloplast B”.
Group 2 : Patients in this group were rehabilitated with maxillary heat cured acrylic dentures lined with acrylic based soft liner ”VERTEX soft” .
The effect of each of the previously mentioned lining materials on candidal counts was assessed by sampling the tissue surface of the denture following the swab technique. The swabs were taken from the fitting surface of denture base The colony forming units (CFU) of yeast –like organism were visually examined to detect colony morphology characterized by white opaque raised areas and yeast odor. The colonies were quantified according to the scale developed by Oslen and modified by Bergendal et al. The germ tube test was carried out to confirm the presence of Candida albicans.
Samples were collected at time of denture insertion, one, three and six months after denture insertion. Data were tabulated and statistically analyzed.
The results obtained from this study revealed negative growth of Candida albicans in the two studied groups one month after denture insertion. Three months after denture insertion confluent growth score (3) was detected in 100% the two studied groups. At the end of the follow-up period confluent growth (score 3) was detected in the two studied groups (100%).
Although the means of the CFU showed higher values among cases wearing maxillary dentures lined with Molloplast B , However, no significant difference was detected compared to cases wearing maxillarydentures lined with liner ”VERTEX soft” .
Within the limitations of this study, the following could be concluded:
. Silicone lining material, Molloplast B is more heavily colonized with Candida albicans than Vertex soft acrylic.
