Abstract

Ultrasonography has been considered to be one of the most valuable diagnostic tools in veterinary medicine. The study was performed on 133 dogs of different ages, breeds and both sex were used for assessment of diagnostic value of ultrasonography as an aid of diagnosis in naturally and experimentally occurring disease conditions. The study was divided into three parts; included establishment of normal ultrasonographic images of different organs, diagnosis of clinical cases with the aid of ultrasonography and experimental induction of steroid hepatopathy. Ultrasonography was preferable than other diagnostic tools for diagnosis of digestive, urinary, general abdomen, testicular and splenic affections. Clinical examination, biochemical analysis and ultrasonography were synergistic for definitive and final diagnosis of clinical cases. The reported standard values for some echocardiographic parameters provide important information for improving the development of this technique, which is simple to use, harmless and non-invasive. Ultrasound-guided biopsy provided valuable information about morphology of internal parenchymatous organs. In experimental part of experiment, ultrasonographic examination after dexamethasone administration (2.2mg/kg body weight for 28 days) revealed marked increase in hepatic echogenicity when compared with splenic echogenicity. Cytologic and histopathologic analysis showed hepatocellular swelling due to accumulation of cytoplasmic vacuoles. There were significant (P ≤0.05) and progressive increases in serum activities of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma glutamyltransferase (GGT) and alanine transaminase (ALT) by day28 of experiment. It was concluded that ultrasonography, biochemical tests and clinical examination must go together in harmony and synchronization to accomplish a correct diagnosis.
