Abstract

One of the major goal of the Government of Egypt is to provide food security for the over increasing population. Consequentry, a search for the soil and water resources, which are the main elements for agricultural production is a must. The increasing of demand for land for agricultural purposes, requires that decision be made on the most beneficial use of limited land resources. At the same time it is important to conserve these resources for the future. It is a function of land evaluation to bring about an understanding of the relationships between the conditions of the land and the uses to which it is put, and to present planner with comparisons and options of promising alternatives. The land capability classification is one of a number of interpretive groupings made primarily for agricultural purposes. In this classification the arable soils are grouped according to their potentialities and limitations for sustained production of the common cultivated crops. rurthermore, an international cooperative effort, FAO developed framework for land evaluation by which land can be assessed, with regard to its soil and climatic conditions, in terms of requirements for successful growth of different crops for alternative types of land use.
Today, the remote sensing is considered one of the
most important techniques for obtaining land in formation. Remote Sensing technology is a useful aid in soil survey and land evaluation studies. It also opens possibilities for statistically — based survey of soil patterns as an alternative to time—consuming conventional soil survey where the soil properties of interest cannot be mapped by interpretation of surface features.
The present work is and attempt to evaluate the soils of El—Saff area. In order to attainment this goal, the remote sensing technique is used as a subsidiary tool, hence, reliance based on the ground truth.
