Abstract

Cancer of the colon is the third most common cancer in men and women in the developed world, and resection is the only curative treatment. Traditionally, cancers of the colon were removed through large abdominal incisions.
Laparoscopic surgeries have been started to be alternative to open surgery .
Laparoscopic surgery has been established as safe in colorectal surgery.
Laparoscopic surgery remains technically challenging in conditions such as rectal cancer and will be inappropriate for some patients.
Surgeons and hospitals need appropriate training and mentoring before adopting this approach.
The rationale for using laparoscopic surgery is that it can help minimise the trauma of access, reduce pain, and accelerate postoperative return of bowel function and general mobility. All these factors may shorten hospital stay. Other potential benefits include reduced formation of adhesions and lower rates of incisional hernia.
The long term benefits of laparoscopic surgery for colon cancer accomplish adequate oncological clearance as disease control with no significant difference in the involved radial margin or number of LNs harvested and overall survival and associated with less post operative complications comparable to open colectomy.
Colorectal single-port laparoscopy as a new technique can be performed through one incision hidden at the umbilicus. Besides a superior cosmetic result, the potential advantage of less morbidity by minimizing skin incisions may also apply. While notes is experimental at present, single-port laparoscopic colectomy seems to be practical.
Improvements of the robotic surgical system are continuously being made to overcome the technical limitations and disadvantages found during the surgeries. So detailed operation methods are newly designed to adapt to the upgraded model of the robotic surgical system.
