Abstract

The present study was carried out during the time from
September 2011 to April 2012 to elicit the predictors of
occurrence of side effects of midazolam (dormicum) which is
routinely used as sedation for the GI endoscopy at the
gastroenterology Unit, children’s hospital, Ain Shams
University. The pre-procedure sedative used drug is midazolam, a short-acting benzodiazepine. It is very widely used because of its more rapid onset of action, has local tolerance when administered IV, less burning on injection and lack of post operative phlebitis when compared to other sedative drugs.
The patient’s age has a significant impact on the
occurrence of agitation. The study showed that as the patient is older the agitation is more noticed. Our study demonstrated the significant relation of the
low social class with the presence of agitation. The presence of parents and the diagnosed psychological disorders have no
significance or affect on the agitation occurrence, yet the
psychological preparation had a significant role on decreasing the agitation.
