Abstract

Earthquake-Resistant Design does not come into focus in Egypt until two decade due to increase of seismic activity in most regions that promotes the need for reconsidering the seismicity of Egypt and necessity of including seismic loads by methods taken into account Response Modification Factor ( R ) according to the structural system
of the building. The Egyptian code for calculation of loads in structures has gone through major change in its 2003 version. Specifically, the calculation of seismic loads has been completely revised, as compared with 1993 version. During the last nine years, the Egyptian Code Committee for Calculation of seismic Loads on Buildings has submitted some modifications for the 2012 version. Main objectives of the study:
- The first objective of this study is to critically examine the seismic loading provisions in the Egyptian code for calculation of loads and forces on structures ECP-201 2012 and to discuss the scientific basis and background on which the provisions of the code are based. The seismic load provisions and structural analysis procedures presented in Egyptian code are compared with two wellknown international building codes, namely the European code EC8-2004 and International Building Code IBC 2012.
- The second objective of this study is to calculate the base shear values using ECP-201 2012.
Three example building structures are chosen for highlighting the main differences in the forces computed using the ECP 1993, ECP-201 2003 and the ECP-201 2012 codes. These buildings are-XVII a building with moment resistant frames, a building with shear walls and a building with combined lateral load resisting system. The seismic base shear is calculated for each building structure for different cases of soil conditions & different seismic zones.
- The third objective of this study is to calculate the base shear & it is distribution on the vertical elements using ECP-201 2012 comparing the results with ECP-201 1993 &International building code (IBC-2012)Two buildings are examined, first building provided with shear walls, second building using flat slab structural system.
- The fourth objective is to study the design of reinforced concrete shear walls according to ACI-08 & ECP-203 & seismic provisions required by code. Finally, the study presents a number of useful points regarding seismic calculations especially reinforced concrete buildings provided with shear walls The results of the analysis show that:1) Width of the building affects the seismic behavior of buildings according to ECP- 201 1993 although the width of the building not affecting the seismic behavior in ECP-201 2012.
2) In spite of the large differences between “Fb” and “V” in the case of framed structures, small differences obtained in the case of shear walls systems.
3) Shear walls thickness’s have great effect on the lateral drift of the structure.
