Abstract A field experiment was carried out during the two successive summer seasons of 2007-2008 at the experimental farm of Minufiya University in Sadat city, Egypt. The soil was sandy in texture. The aim of this investigation was to study the effect of soil amendments and irrigation levels on moisture distribution, salts accumulation in soil profile, water use efficiency and plant characters (plant height, Ear height, Ear diameter, Ear length, Ear yield, grain yield and shelling percentage). Results exhibited that, increasing irrigation level up to 100% of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) increased significantly moisture distribution in soil profile, while decreasedsalts accumulation in soil profile, water use efficiency, while increased plantcharacters (plant height, Ear height, Ear diameter, Ear length, Ear yield, grain yield and shelling percentage). While, irrigation at 80% ETc had equaleffect on moisture distribution, salts accumulation, and plant characters(plant height, Ear height, Ear diameter, Ear length, Ear yield, grain yield andshelling percentage) showed the lowest values comparing with 100%ETc. While water use efficiency (WUE) increased at 80% of ETc. While at 60% of ETc exhibited the lowest values of water distribution and plant characters ( plant height, Ear height, Ear diameter, Ear length, Ear yield, grain yieldand shelling percentage) and exhibited the highest value of water use efficiency (WUE) and saltsaccumulation. The highest significant valuesmoisture distribution, water use efficiency (WUE) and plant characters(plant height, Ear height, Ear diameter, Ear length, Ear yield, grain yield and shelling percentage) was achieved with applying compost as soil amendment but decreasing salts accumulation in soil profile. Bentonite as soil amendment had equal effect on moisture distribution and salts accumulation in soil profile, water use efficiency (WUE) and plant characters. The lowest values of moisture distribution, water use efficiency (WUE), plant characters (plant height, Ear height, Ear diameter, Ear length, Ear yield, grain yield and shelling percentage)was achieved with out using soil amendments (control),while increasing salts accumulation. Applying compost as soil amendment with the three levels of water application rate increasing the values of moisture distribution, plant characters and water use efficiency while decreased salts accumulation, while bentonite as soil amendment had equal effect on this parameters. While with out applying soil amendments with water application levels was achieved the lowest values of moisture distribution, plant characters, water use efficiency, while increasing salts accumulation. While the highest values was achieved with applying compost as soil amendment with 100% of ETc, While the lowest values was achieved with out applying soil amendments with 60% ETc. |
