Abstract

Obstetric emergencies are the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. Every minute, somewhere in the world a woman dies in pregnancy or child birth. Many of the most frightening and lethal obstetric conditions present in otherwise healthy low-risk women at term, complicating up to 15% of all births. Thus, determining which interventions are most likely to improve the effectiveness, efficiency, and safety in anticipating and responding to obstetric emergencies is an important global health issue. The Common and lethal obstetric emergencies; hemorrhage, eclampsia, uterine rupture, and amniotic fluid embolism.
Labor and delivery units are complex, dynamic places where highly trained professionals from many disciplines work in a fast, unpredictable environment. During obstetric emergencies, time-critical decision-making, team communication and cooperation can make the difference between life and death.
The study is descriptive. Its aim is to assess the level of nursing care offered during obstetrical emergencies at the labor ward through assessing knowledge and performance of nurses related to labor emergencies
The study was conducted at labor ward in Ain Shams university Maternity hospital. The subjects of the present study included all available nurses (25) working in labor ward whose offered nursing care for 108 observed obstetrical emergency case as each nurses observed from 4 to5 cases.
There are two types of tools for data collection that are used for achieving the aim of this study: The interviewing questionnaire tool and the performance checklist.
The pilot study was conducted for 3 nurses that represent (10% of the sample) those were while caring for 4-5 women at critical situation to evaluate the applicability and reliability of data collection plane. According to pilot study results, tool items were modified to be clearer for the study nurses as well as assessment point were organized at the same time data collection plane was modified.
The findings of the study revealed:
•Almost all of the nurses didn’t attend training program regarding obstetrical emergency nursing care.
•More than two third of the nurses have poor knowledge regarding obstetrical emergency nursing care.
•About one third of nurses didn’t perform any of obstetrical emergency nursing care toward obstetrical emergency cases
•The limitation & non availability of human/non human resources have a negative impact on nurses’ performance during offering obstetrical emergency care as evaluated by nurses at labor ward
•Highly statistically significant relation between total nurses’ performance and total nurses’ knowledge
Accordingly the finding of the study the following important recommendations are propose:
•Build up the nurses capacity related to obstetrical emergency nursing care through regular training program
•On the job training was highly recommended for quality of best emergency care
•Developing a simplified and comprehensive protocol including guideline about obstetrical emergency nursing management.
