Abstract Nursing care standards of colostomy are significant action to ensure quality of care. The examination of nurses’ knowledge and practices regarding the nursing care standards of colostomy has not been conducted in Assiut University Hospital. This descriptive study design was aimed at establishing the level of nurses’ knowledge and practice and to examine the relationship between nurses’ knowledge and practice for developing the nursing care standards of colostomy. The study was conducted at General Surgery Department of Assiut University Hospital, in the period of one year (from June 2012 to December 2012). To accomplish the purpose of this study, data were collected from sixty nurses working in general department of surgery. The following tools were utilized for data collection; 1) Nurses’ knowledge Questionnaire sheet which consisted of two parts; Part 1: biosocial characteristic of nurses and Part 2 : assessment of nurses knowledge. 2) Observation checklist sheet which included general nursing care for colostomy and instruction given to patient by nurses. Data were collected using semi structured interview. The knowledge of each nurse involved in the study was assessed by questionnaire sheet. Then the observation checklist was carried out while the nurses were on duty during morning through overt structured observation checklist. Data were analyzed. A probability of 0.05 was adopted as the level of significance for testing the research questions. Mean, standard deviation, percentages, distribution, correlation coefficient and T-test for comparison of means were used to test the research variables. Main findings of the present study were: The majority of the study sample were female (75%), their age were less than 40 years with percentage (69.2%) and Mean ± SD (32.44 ± 9.798), married (90.4%), completed a diploma in nursing (88.5%) and their duration of experiences was more than 3 years (92.3%) with Mean ± SD (11.33± 6.92). All the participating nurses (100%) had unsatisfactory level of knowledge and practice regarding colostomy. Nurse’s knowledge regarding definition of colostomy was at high level (M=0.8269 out of 1) while there knowledge regarding potential complication at low level (M = 2.2308 out of 9). The results showed that (82.7%) of nurses had knowledge regarding the definition of colostomy at satisfactory level but the minimum number of (7.7%) of nurses had knowledge regarding the physiology of colon at satisfactory level. Generally the results showed that all nurses had total knowledge regarding nursing care standards of colostomy at unsatisfactory level. The results showed that nurses had practice regarding irrigating the colon through colostomy at highest level of score (M = 19.4231 out of 34) while their practice regarding optimal nutrition at low level of score (M = 2.4615 out of 32). The result also showed that nurses had zero score in assessment of bowel sound because it is not applicable to nurses. The results showed that (13.5%) of nurses had practice regarding the attainment of fluid balance at satisfactory level but the minimum number of (1.9%) of nurses had practice regarding the monitoring of vital signs at satisfactory level. Generally the results showed that all nurses had unsatisfactory level regarding nursing care standards of colostomy. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient was used to examine the relationship between knowledge and practice variables. It was found that there was a positive weak relationship between knowledge and practice regarding nursing care standards of colostomy and not significant (r = 0.15, p = .3). There was a statistical significant differences between nurse’s age and their knowledge while there was no statistical differences between their age and nurse’s practice. There was a statistical significant differences between nurse’s gender and their knowledge while there was no statistical differences between their gender and nurse’s practice. There was a statistical significant differences between nurse’s marital status and their practice while there was no statistical differences between their marital status and nurse’s knowledge. There was statistical significant differences between nurses’ experience period and their knowledge and practice. Summary 26 It was concluded that nurses’ knowledge and practice in the nursing care standard of colostomy were unsatisfactory. It was needed to be improved through implementation of proposed nursing care standards of colostomy. |
