Abstract

The present study was carried out on the protected area of Ashtoum El-Gamil, El-Manzalah Lake during the period from May 2010 to January 2011. There were variations among mean values of the tested water measurements (pH, dissolved oxygen and salinity) due to sampling locations and seasons of the collected water samples from this park. Macrobenthic community was found including fifteen species belonging to three groups. Mollusca ranked the first position constituting about 68.5 % of the total population density of macrobenthic invertebrates followed by Arthropoda and Annelida constituting 28.7 % and 2.8 % respectively of the total P. D. of macrobenthic fauna. Meiofauna community consisted of 3 main groups. Ostracoda was the first one constituting 70.71 % of total P. D. of meiofauna followed by Foraminifera 27 % and Nematoda 1.5 %. Data obtained revealed that there were significant (P≤0.0001) differences among sampling seasons and stations as well as their interactions concerning the levels of heavy metals tested in either water, sediment, or fish collected from this protected area. The elements level took the descending order Zn ≥ Cd ≥ Pb ≥ Fe ≥ Cu in the water, Pb ≥ Fe ≥ Cu ≥ Zn ≥ Cd in the sediment, and Fe ≥ Pb ≥ Zn ≥ Cu ≥ Cd in the fish body samples. Concerning the bacterial load in water and fish of this park. The following bacterial genera were isolated from water samples: Aeromonas, Bacillus, Proteus, Pseudomonas, Streptococcus, S. epidermidis, S. aureus, Micrococcus, Serratia, Vibrio and E. coli. The predominant microorganisms isolated from water were E. coli, Bacllus sp., Vibrio sp. and Pseudomonas sp. The bacterial species isolated also from gills, liver and intestinal were namely V. cholera, V. parahaemolyticus, Aeromonas sp., E. coli, Yersinia sp., Proteus, Pseudomonas sp., Micrococcus sp., S. epidermidis, S. aureus and Streptococcus sp. The most pathogenic bacteria for fish were Pseudomonas sp., V. cholera, Aeromonas sp. and Pseudomonas sp. The dominant classes were chlorophytes, diatoms and cyanoprokaryotes. The three groups altogether constitute more than 95% and 85% of the total phytoplankton abundance and total number of taxa, respectively.
