Abstract This case control study was conducted at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital to evaluate the level of adiponectin in patients with GDM. In this study 80 pregnant women were selected and divided into two groups, control group included 40 women without gestational diabetes and study group included 40 women with GDM. In this study the women were selected at child bearing period (20-35 years) with average BMI. Patients with pre-existing diabetes mellitus, multiple pregnancy, fetal abnormality and hyper-tension were excluded from the study. On admission all subjects were subjected to verbal consent, detailed history and examination and withdrawal of 5mL of random venous blood sample for estimation of adiponectin, glucoses Hb, WBCs, SGOT, SGPT and creatinine. Our results showed that there was a highly statistical significant difference between control and study group according to parity (P=0.001) and according to glucose concentration (P=0.001) and according to adiponectin levels (P=0.002). also there was a statistical significant difference between the two groups according to gestational age (P=0.013), BMI (P=0.035) and serum creatinine (P=0.034) while there was no statistical significant difference between the two groups according to abortion, age, height, weight, hemoglobin, WBCs, SGOT and SGPT (P>0.05). Our present study showed that there was no any correlation found between adiponectin and studied parameters in both study and control groups. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that serum adiponectin level was significantly lower in pregnant women with GDM compared with healthy pregnant women. |
