Abstract

The subject of this work is the preparation and characterization of
poundedwaxesand artificial vaselines. These products were obtained by blending
ique, The composition of compounded waxes derived from either micro-
. ewaxand paraffin wax or petroleum wax and various types polymer waxes,
ethecompositionof artificial vaseIines derived from various types of mineral oils
petroleumwaxes/and crystal modifying additives.
Thisthesis includes three chapters:
firstchapter covers the literature concerning informations about petroleum
:esandvaselines with respect to manufacture, chemical composition, physical
pertiesand many of their applications.
secondchapter describes the methods of preparation of materials, analytical
iquesand the apparatus which were employed in this thesis.
thirdchapter includes the discussion and results of the work which were carried
by thecandidate. Furthermore this chapter is divided into three parts:
Inthe part 1, the characterization of starting materials were discussed. These
terialsincludepetroleum waxes, petroleum oils and polymer waxes.
Petroleumwaxes consist of two main types: oil free waxes such as micro-
. e waxand paraffin wax, and oil containing waxes such as petrolatum and
Thehydrocarbonoils are both white oils such as medicinal and technical
andrefinedlubricating oils such as heavy neutral oil and bright stock oil.
Fromthe standpoint of purity, materials such as microcrystalline wax, paraffin
and medicinalwhite oils have properties which are described as food grade type,
le soft wax, unrefined petrolatum and technical white oil have aromatic
ocarbons higher than specification limit.
Inadditionto, Iow molecular weight polymer waxes comprising amorphous
crystalline homopolymers of olefins containing 2-3 carbon atoms, copolymer.
