Abstract Systemic lupus erythematous is a multisystem, pleomorphic disease in which inflammation, antibody production and complementfixing immune complex deposition result in tissue damage. Although the definite etiopathogenesis of SLE remains unclear, many different mechanisms may contribute to the pathogenesis of SLE. Factors such as sunlight and drugs could trigger the disorder, but no single cause has been identified and SLE has a complex genetic basis. RANKL is a tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-related cytokine expressed by various bone cells including osteoblasts and their immature precursors, T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes and megakaryocytes. RANKL is a type II homotrimeric transmembrane protein that is expressed as a membrane-bound and a secreted protein, which is derived from the membrane form as a result of either proteolytic cleavage or alternative splicing. |
