Abstract

The study takes its point of departure from the firm belief that Prophetic hadith is one of the Islamic guidance with Qur’an and it deserves the researchers’ study and analysis. The main purpose of this research is to demonstrate the most used cohesive strategies used in some dialogic hadiths, how these cohesive strategies are expressed when the hadiths are translated from Arabic into English and how the use of specific cohesive markers leads to the total coherence of hadiths as texts. The study applies the pragmatic relevance theory by Wilson and Sperber in examining the cohesive strategies in fifteen hadiths as an attempt to present a new linguistic facet for the study of hadith. The researcher tried to amalgamate some cognitive elements of the relevance approach and the social aspects of the pragmatic tools, such as politeness principle, implicature and the co-operative principle. The researcher found it necessary to mention some parts concerning cohesion in Arabic under the title: ”ḥurūf il ma’āni” and examining the English equivalents for these Arabic markers after that.
