Abstract Laparoscopy has rapidly emerged as the preferred surgical approach to a number of different diseases. In abdominal emergencies, both components of treatment (exploration and surgery) can be accomplished via laparoscopy. Lack of recommendations that are evidence based has hindered more widespread usage of laparoscopy in emergency settings and in spite of the growing interest, its rule in the management algorithm of abdominal emergencies awaits definite clarification. The aim of this work was to evaluate the diagnostic and therapeutic role of laparoscopy in the setting of pediatric abdominal surgical emergencies exploring its feasibility, diagnostic and therapeutic potential benefits, difficulties and possible drawbacks. from January 2009 to December 2011, a total of 153 children with age span between 0-18 years, presented with acute abdominal pain to emergency Surgery Department at Tanta University hospital (Egypt) and Burlo Garofolo hospital (Italy) were initially included in this study. |
