Abstract

One hundred random samples of raw milk, collec-ted from markets and shops in different localities in Kaliobia Governorate, were examined in this work for evaluation of their bacteriological quality.
The bacteriological examination revealed that the total colony count /ml. milk ranged from 40X104 to 125X1012, with a mean value of 39.46X1011.
Coliforms were present in all examined samples at varying counts (MPN/100 ml)ranging from 43X102 to 94)(1012, with a mean value of 10.99X1011.
could be isolated from 27% of examined samples, while Citrobacter freundii,Enterobacter cloaceae ,Klebsiella oxytoca, K.rhinoscleromatis, Ent. aerogenes, Cit.diver-sus, Ent. agglomerans, K.ozaenae, Cit amalonaticus and K.pneumoniae were present at varying percentages rang-ing from 4% to 35%.
Serological typing of isolated E.coli revealed identification of the following serotypes:026 K60
(7 strains),0111 K58(6 strains),0128 K67(2 strains) and
one strain The mean total enterococci count/ml. milk was 53.44X104. The differential counts are recorded.
Staphylococci were present in 98% of examined samples, with a mean count of 13.97X105/ml. Coagulase positive staphylococci could be isolated from 39% of examined samples. All strong coagulase positive staph. (4+) produced thermonuclease, while 72.73%, 66.67% and 20% of coagulase positive (3+,2+ and 1+) respectively produced thermonuclease.
The public health importance and economic significance of existing microorganisms as well as the suggested measures for improving the quality of raw market milk have been discussed.
