Abstract

It is now widely recognized that electroless plating is the most remarkable and versatile technique in plating. The properties of electroless nikel are very different from that of electrodeposited metal. This is due to the total different deposit mechanism and the presence of phosphorous and/or boron in the deposit.
The effect of changing bath temperature on the coating thikness at different plating times for the three Ni-P , Ni-B and Ni-B P is studied. A noticeable change in coating thikness was found for Ni-B-P at all temperatures and heat-treatment conditions.
The effect of heat treatment on the crystallization behavior of an electroless Ni-B-P is also studied. For as plated samples, the X-ray diffraction pattern showed microcrystalline deposit of Ni-Ni4B3, NiP2 and Ni12P5. Good crystalline structures have been noted for deposit heat-treated. The Ni-P-B deposit in the as plated condition showed higher hardness values.
Ductility of Ni-P and Ni-B deposits is less than that of deposits of Ni-B-P. It is noted that heat treatment improves the surface wear resistance. It was found by corrosion resistance measurements, that heat treatment temperatures of electrless nikel deposits is an excellent corrosion resistance.
