Abstract Description of study area and previous studies I’ 1-1-Introduction: This chapter includes four main elements: (1) Description of the area: giving a complete description for the area of interest which is the Arabian Gulf and a part of the Gulf of Oman. (2)Climatological conditions: induding all meteorological elements for the area of study, wind system, air temperature, relative humidity, ....etc. (3) Hydrogra.phic conditions from previous studies made in”-the study area, related to water masses, water temperature salinity, fresh water influx, ...etc, and (4) The objective of work. 1-2-Description of the area: The area of study is extending from 22 0 ~ 31 0 Nand 48 0 - 62 0 E. The Straitof Hormuz seoerates the two basins; the Arabian Gulf, which is a shallow one, and the Gulf of Oman which is a deep basin. Figure (1-1) shows the bathymetry in the area of interest. The Arabian Gulf is a basin extending northwest-southeast, it has a gently sloping bottom on the Arabian side (35 cm/km),while a steep features are found near the Iranian side (175 cm/km), EIGindyand Hegazi, (1995). Along the Iranian side high mountains are found with altitudesexceeding 1500 m, whereas low deserts extends in the western part, on the Arabian side. Qatar Peninsula is situated as a protruding land in the ArabianGulf. According to Purser and Seibold (1973) the depth along the axis ismore than 80 m. The dimensions of the Arabian Gulf (48 0·56 0 E), Emery (1956), Purser and Seibold (1973), are as follows: Maximum depth = 80 m. |
