Abstract

A total of 366 cases were examined in the form of 216
freshly dead and 150 apparently healthy freshly
slaughtered turkeys. Out of the 366 turkeys, a total of 735 isolates wererecovered. from the dead cases 497 isolates were
recorded and the rest (238) were from intestine of
slaughtered birds. The highest recovery rate was recorded from jejenum offreshly dead and apparently healthy freshly slaughteredturkeys (~5.4% and 64% respectively). The isolated clostridium were identified on the basis
of it’s morphological cUlture, biochemical ’and
serological characters. - Serologically the isolated microorganisms belonged to, Clostridium perfringens type A, Clostridium perfringenstype Band Clostridium perfringens type D.
Study on sensitivity of the isolated Clostridium
perfringens to different chemotherapeutic agent
revealed that the organisms were very sensitive to
ampicillin, Doxycyclins and penicillin. Less sensitive
to tetracyclins, oxytetracyclins and femoquine. Not
sensitive to chl~amphenicol, colistin, erthromycin,
gentamycin, kan~in, neomycin and streptomycin. Pathogenicity tests of Clostridium perfringens –types A,B and D were carried out on 35 day old turkeys and on one day old turkey pOUlts (for type A only).
Necrotic enteritis was experimentally induced in 35 day
old turkey inoculated with Clostridium perfringens type
A broth culture. Gangrenous dermatomyositis was induced by Lnoou Lat Lnq
35 day old turkey intramUSCUlarly with Clostridium
perfringens type A broth culture. When one day old turkeys inoculated with Clostridium perfringens type A broth culture intramuscular the
lesions were similar that of 35 day old but more sever
in one day old turkey. Mortality of 80’ occurred in 35 day old turkeys
inoculated with Clostridium perfringens type A
intramuscularly. Mortality was lOOt in one day old turkeys inoculated
11M and intra yolk sac with Clostridium perfringens
type A but was 80t in the inoculated turkey poult about
oral rout. No mortalities ob••rved in all other groups.
The histopatholog”’l of experimentaly inoculated birds
was investigated.
