Abstract

The main objective of this study is to investigate the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features of cleft construction in English and Arabic.
This thesis consists of four chapters and conclusion: Chapter one includes a general introduction. It illustrates the meaning of cleft construction as a linguistic concept. Chapter one deals briefly with cleft construction in both English and Arabic. This chapter contains the review of literature.
Chapter Two contains an analysis of cleft constructions in English. It deals with the types of cleft constructions in general. Chapter two draws attention to the syntactic features of the parts of the cleft sentences. In this chapter an investigation of the syntactic analyses of English cleft construction: extrapositional and expletive analyses are presented. It also presents some of the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic properties of cleft sentences.
Chapter Three contains an analysis of cleft constructions in Arabic. It deals with the types of cleft construction under study (Arabic cleft and pseudo cleft ”ma … huwwa”). Chapter three draws attention to the syntactic features. It also presents some of the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic properties of cleft sentences.
Chapter Four deals with the contrastive analysis between English and Arabic cleft construction. The similarities and differences between the two languages with respect to the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features of the cleft constructions are addressed in this chapter. This chapter presents a summary of the study. The main implications of the findings and conclusions are presented.
