Abstract
It has been observed that the engineering students, at Higher Technological Institute (10th of Ramadan city-6th of October Branch), are in a bad need for the improvement of their English language skills. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of designing an ESp programme on developing reading and writing skills for engineering students in Light of Future Challenges and Needs. Based on the review of literature, the related studied, and professors and students’ questionnaires, the researcher identified the students’ needs and designed the proposed programme. The researcher taught the programme to a sample of 31 students, in the first year at Higher Technological Institute (10th of Ramadan city-6th of October Branch) in a complete semester. pre- and post achievement tests were administered to the engineering students representing an experimental group and a control group to determine how much progress they made in their reading and writing skills. The comparison between the mean scores of the students of the two groups in the pre and post tests proved that the students made considerable progress in their reading and writing skills in favor of the experimental group due to the use of the proposed ESp programme; which proved to be effective in developing both the required reading and writing skills.
