Abstract

Complex thermal stresses occurs in parts during welding due to the localized application of heat.
Residual stress remain after the compltion of welding process and sometimes cause failure of structural members. High tensile residual stresses in areas near the weld can cause premature failure of increase the possibility of fatigue fracture and stress corrosion cracking in weldment.
Comressive residual stresses in the bas plate can reduce the buckling strength of structureal members subjected to compressive loading.
Dissimilar metal joints are those joints between two parent materials of different alloy systems or groups within an alloy system may be adopted. Dissimilar metal joints are used in many industrial applications, steam circuit of electrical generating plant, reformer tubes, fired heater in petroleum and chimical industry, heat exchanger, etc.
The characterstic features, metallurigical and mechanical, of dissimilar joints have been wieldy pursuit, but there is even less information on residual stresses in joints made of dissimilar metals.
Therefore, more investigation must be carried out on this subject.
This experimental study are dealt with residual stresses of welded joint for plate and pipe welding.
Both similar and dissimilae metal joints have been adopted. Compaeative study have been made to detect the features of residual welding stresses in similar and dissimilar metal joint.
These features include, values of residual stresses in not only weld metal but also heat affected zone, difference in residual stress values between face and root measurement, and the percentag of released stresses after each sectioning step.
Stress-relaxation technique by sectioning and strain measurement with electric-resistance strain gauge
was adopted in these experiments.
This study will help to get ideas about residual stresses in dissimilar metal joints compared to that in similar metal joints. Also, the potential difference in the features of residual stresses in these two cases can be clarified.
