Abstract

Each caregiver responds differently to his/her role, depending primarily on the emotional closeness that existed prior to assuming the responsibility, and the ability to adapt to the strain incumbent within the caregiver role over an extended period of time. Therefore, this study aim was to assess the effect of psychosocial counseling sessions on family caregivers living with patients having dementia. A quasi - experimental design was utilized in this study. The study was conducted at the patient clinics of El-Abassia Governmental Hospital for Mental Health, and the Geriatric Center in Ain Shams University Hospital. The recruited sample included 61 caregivers in pre counseling that decreased in post counseling to 49 caregivers. Three tools were used for data collection; an interview questionnaire form, burden of the family caregivers, and adaptive coping scale. Results revealed that the implementation of counseling intervention sessions showed a statistically significant improvement in family caregivers’ knowledge about the disease. The study concluded that duration of caregiving influences coping strategies among caregivers. Therefore it is recommended that caregivers need social support as a factor enhancing adaptive coping, by providing the family with adequate support either from other relatives or professionals which is of utmost importance.
